Moving checklist: What do you need to consider when moving?

From a team that does it every day.

Moving means change – but also effort. To ensure you don’t forget to consider all the important steps, we’ve created a free moving checklist for you. This checklist serves as a guide for a stress-free move. Adapt it to your individual situation as needed.

A move is imminent? Then the question quickly arises: Will your existing kitchen fit in the new space?

If so, you need to plan as you would for a new purchase. Consider the following:

Compare that to how many compromises you’d have to make with your old kitchen.

Perhaps another option presents itself: Your next tenant can take over the existing kitchen – and a new one might be cheaper than you thought!

Now for the main part: The moving checklist for your move!

Before the move

Tip: At MTF, you receive an all-in-one offer that is tailored exactly to your move – with fixed schedules, a personal contact, and the highest quality standards.

Termination of the old rental agreement

Terminate the current rental agreement in a timely manner. For fixed-term contracts, the tenancy ends automatically upon expiration of the term; for indefinite-term contracts, a notice period of one month is generally required.

Clarify transfer and takeover

Discuss the transfer of furnishings with the new tenant and record this in writing.

Reading meter readings

Read and document gas, electricity, water and heating meters in the old and new accommodation.

Inform utility companies

Arrange deregistration/re-registration of electricity, gas, water, heating, district heating, radio and television, telephone and internet.

Childcare and school

Secure places in new facilities and register in good time.

Forwarding order at the post office

Apply for a mail forwarding order to ensure that your mail is forwarded to the new address.

Apply for special leave

Check with your employer whether special leave is granted for the move.

Organize apartment handover

Arrange dates for the handover of the old apartment and the takeover of the new one and draw up a handover protocol.

Set up a no-parking zone

If necessary, apply for a short-term no-parking zone for loading and unloading the moving van (possibly through the moving company).

Plan renovation work

Organize necessary renovations in the old and new apartment and commission tradesmen in a timely manner.

Hire a moving company or helpers

Hire a professional moving company or organize moving assistants, packing boxes and vans and set a moving date.

Obtain packaging material

Organize moving boxes, tape, and other materials ahead of time. Tip: We provide all packing materials without a deposit.

Inform household insurance

Inform your household insurance company in good time about the upcoming move – insurance coverage usually also applies to the move.

Collect financial receipts

For tax deductibility purposes, collect all moving receipts (e.g., shipping company invoices, fuel costs, packing materials, tools, renovation costs, broker fees, etc.).

Interior design

Use the floor plan of the new apartment to plan the furnishings in advance.

Organize waste disposal

Obtain information about waste collection and registration formalities and check bulky waste disposal options in the municipality.

Request final rental statement

Request a final rental statement for your old apartment from the property management.

Adjust standing orders

Cancel or change standing orders for rent, operating costs and energy costs of the old apartment.
