Terminate the current rental agreement in a timely manner. For fixed-term contracts, the tenancy ends automatically upon expiration of the term; for indefinite-term contracts, a notice period of one month is generally required.
Discuss the transfer of furnishings with the new tenant and record this in writing.
Read and document gas, electricity, water and heating meters in the old and new accommodation.
Arrange deregistration/re-registration of electricity, gas, water, heating, district heating, radio and television, telephone and internet.
Secure places in new facilities and register in good time.
Apply for a mail forwarding order to ensure that your mail is forwarded to the new address.
Check with your employer whether special leave is granted for the move.
Arrange dates for the handover of the old apartment and the takeover of the new one and draw up a handover protocol.
If necessary, apply for a short-term no-parking zone for loading and unloading the moving van (possibly through the moving company).
Organize necessary renovations in the old and new apartment and commission tradesmen in a timely manner.
Hire a professional moving company or organize moving assistants, packing boxes and vans and set a moving date.
Organize moving boxes, tape, and other materials ahead of time. Tip: We provide all packing materials without a deposit.
Inform your household insurance company in good time about the upcoming move – insurance coverage usually also applies to the move.
For tax deductibility purposes, collect all moving receipts (e.g., shipping company invoices, fuel costs, packing materials, tools, renovation costs, broker fees, etc.).
Use the floor plan of the new apartment to plan the furnishings in advance.
Obtain information about waste collection and registration formalities and check bulky waste disposal options in the municipality.
Request a final rental statement for your old apartment from the property management.
Cancel or change standing orders for rent, operating costs and energy costs of the old apartment.
Return all keys of the old apartment to the landlord.
Register your new residence with the relevant registration office within three days.
Have the change of address entered in the vehicle registration certificate and notify the vehicle insurance company or deregister the vehicle and register it at the new place of residence.
If applicable, register the dog with the new municipality.

Update nameplate on doorbell and mailbox.
Return, sell or give away boxes that are no longer needed.
Clarify the return of the deposit with the former landlord.
